The goals of the simulator are primarily to have fun, and also to see what variables affect the performance of a pinewood derby car the most. Is it friction? The weight? The wheels? Does an aerodynamic design help? Likely, the answer to all of these is "sort of", but why not take a stab at quantifying them? Possibly we'll have some fun in the process.
